There are so many choices available today when it comes to flooring. These choices can range from common old linoleum, carpets, stone and ceramics, wood, right through to the high-end exotic types of flooring (think baby Himalayan yak…. OK, that was just a joke!) … But the point remains however, that whatever someone desires as […]
Carpet As A Fantastic Flooring Choice
Strictly speaking a carpet is a floor covering, consisting of a textile pile which is attached to a backing. This is then stretched from wall to wall and adhered or tacked to secure it in place. The pile used to construct the carpet is made of a natural fibre such as wool, a man-made fibre such as polypropylene, or a blend of both mad-made and natural fibre.
The different types of carpet can include a woven carpet, which can consist of either a plush pile (cut pile) or a berber (or loop) pile; a needle felt carpet which is a highly durable carpet typically found in the commercial high-traffic environments; or a tufted carpet which is probably the most common manufacturing method for the carpets designed for the domestic market.
The types of textiles used in the construction of carpet include the natural fibres such a wool, as well as the various man-made fibres which include polypropylene, polyester, and acrylic. It is also a very common manufacturing process to blend wool with synthetics. These blended carpets are usually measured by the percentage of wool to synthetics, such as 50/50, 60/40, or 70/30.
Generally speaking wool is particularly durable and it is easily dyed which makes it a very popular choice for higher quality carpeting, and to take advantage of the durability when used in blended carpet types.
Once, synthetic carpets were considered cheap, easy, and not particularly long-lasting. However the modern synthetics are much more advanced and the carpet manufacturing process is more technologically advanced, thus many of the high-end synthetic and blended carpets can often match wool in terms of their life-span.
There are carpets that cater for the entire range of budgets. A home can be carpeted very economically, or very expensively when considering the higher end carpets.
Carpet is typically manufactured in rolls of a uniform width. When installing carpet, this width can be cut down to fit to the particular room or area in question and sections of the carpet can be joined together. An underlay (a cushioned “pad”) is usually installed underneath the carpet itself and serves the purpose of comfort, absorbing impact, improving imperfections in the floor, and improving the sound and thermal properties of the carpeted floor.
Carpet can be a great choice of flooring that is economical, long-lasting, flexible, warm, and comfortable.
